CAIRNS Airport passengers are being encouraged to use ride-sharing app Uber to get to and from their flights.
The airport released an advertisement showing how “easy” it is to use the service on its Facebook site earlier this week.
Yesterday Uber followed that with an announcement it had struck an agreement with the airport that would “deliver seamless and hassle-free rideshare pick-ups and drop-offs at domestic and international terminals”.
The airport has set up dedicated ride-share waiting zones for arriving customers to meet with uberX drivers booked through the app.
Departing passengers will also be dropped off at designated zones.
Uber Queensland general manager Alex Golden praised the airport for putting the passenger experience first.
In the meantime, Cairns Taxis chairman Layne Gardiner said he wasn’t surprised the deal had been done.
“It’s their business; it’s a privately owned company,” he said.
Mr Gardiner said Cairns Taxis had this week launched a new app allowing passengers to book a ride and pay with their card without incurring additional credit card fees.
